Merhaba EAB! (Hello in Turkish!)

Thank you to all who came out to the meeting. Here is a list of this week’s EAB events, as well as updates and opportunities:

Sustainability Fact of the Week: Did you know that as of last week all UCSB dining Commons are now certified Green Businesses through Santa Barbara’s Green Business Certification program? For more info, click on the link : http://www.noozhawk.com/article/020912_green_business_program. In total UCSB has 8 Green Business Certifications to date with 4 more anticipated by the University Center in 2012. Go Gauchos!

Restoration with CCBER

West End of Manzanita Village at the picnic tables

We will be working with CCBER to plant native plant species in order to decrease the effects of erosion on our coastal paradise. Make sure to wear gardening clothes, sunscreen, and bring some water in your reusable water bottle! :)

Please meet in West End of Manzanita Village – where Ocean Road and Del Playa cross at the beginning of campus.

Tour of San Julian Ranch

*This tour was previously scheduled for last Monday and is now on Friday. Please meet at the IV Food Co-op at 9:45AM to drive to the ranch. We will be back on campus by 12pm.

There will be an all-day Free Store at the Occupy SB Festival! Please join in this experiment in gift economy! Bring anything you don’t want or need – extra clothes, fruit from your trees, books, working appliances and electronics, dvds, etc. Take home any neat stuff you find!  The Free Store will be a feature of the Occupy SB Festival, so stick around for the music, food, games and film at the rest of the festival!

Ally will be leading a carpool to the event — please meet at IV Food Co-op at 1pm if you would can drive/want a ride.

 How Do you Sea Plastic? Photo Contest 

Join the Coastal Fund in their mission to integrate UCSB students with the environment by showing us how you SEA plastic. Not just sunsets, be creative!

Submit pictures that best represent plastic pollution in the environment for a chance to win a unique collection of ECO-prizes.Please submit one photo, as well as a brief 2 to 3 sentence summary of what you are trying to capture, to the Coastal Fund.  The summary must include a description of the location your photograph was taken.  E-mail all submissions by March 16th at midnight for a chance to win a collection of awesome ECO-prizes.  The winning photo will be featured on Coastal Fund’s website, brochures and merchandise.  Please e-mail your photo submissions to CoastalFundoutreach@gmail.com.

The Coastal Fund board will judge the photos based on creativity and relevance to the theme.  The finalists will be announced by April 2, 2012 and displayed in the UCEN.

Green Building Workshop

Take this exciting and FREE “Intro to LEED and Green Building Workshop at UCSB.” Completing it will make you eligible for to take the LEED Green Associate exam.

This course is intended for those who are new to green building and looking to learn the basics of green building and LEED. The course offers an introduction to USGBC <http://www.usgbc.org/>, green building principles and the fundamentals of the LEED Rating System. It includes topics on climate change and building impacts; motivators for green building; and integrative versus conventional approaches – and the associated benefits- to building design, construction and operations. The intent of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the intent, concepts and terms for each LEED credit category, as well as green building best practices, regulations and incentives.

EENG Fundraiser
Wednesday, Feb 22, 4:00-7:00pm
South Coast Deli

Next Wednesday, February 22, from 4-7pm, the LOOP and South Coast Deli are holding a fundraiser to help support EENG (Environmental Education for the Next Generation). 40% of all proceeds will help power the launch of EENG’s new chapter. There will be live music, great food and great people, and for those of you who are 21….there will be $1.50 beers. Just print out the fundraiser coupon here and present it at the register!
